who is the boss, in the us? in a democracy, the answer is simple: the citizens, acting in concert to carry out their will expressed in referendum or initiative. but the usa is not a democracy, and the answer boils down to, who will the army obey? often how many will obey, a, b, or c?
the usa constitution is a contemptible hold-over from a powdered wig age, written to make sure the be-wigged enjoyed the fruits of slavery. they dispersed power hoping for stasis, madison was perfectly aware slavery was on the way out- but not in his life-time if his constitution could prevent it.
and now the shameful mess is in your hands, and every american can not detect the smell, but can see the seams of society pulling apart. much headscratching, but little understanding of the nature of your heritage.

you can't have a sensible conversation if you don't understand the fundamental laws of the nation. the usa is not a democracy. lincoln lied. the nation is not ruled 'by the people.' it was the intent of james madison that there be a political structure of elected aristocrats who were themselves rich, or working for the rich. he said precisely that, in promoting his constitution to the grandees of state government, who decided to establish the federal government with those characteristics. only rhode island resisted.
the key feature of the constitution is that the people have no power to direct or legislate, as that would inevitably lead to the taxes of the rich being spent on the concerns of the poor.
as usually happens, the rich get richer, the poor more numerous and the society collapses. this happened in 1929, and the usa was pulled back from collapse by ww2. we are now in the second 'gilded age' and there is no prospect of rescue. normally the military take over at this point, after civil war breaks out.
there is nothing to be done, the ship of state was never in the control of the people, and the rich are too rotten to save themselves, and the nation. even referring to 'democracy' in america reveals a staggering level of national ignorance, not just of history, but of current reality.

first you must realize that the foundation of the usa government was set in medieval britain. the structure was intended to prevent the taxes of the rich from being wasted on the needs of the poor. not only is the usa not a democracy, it was designed to prevent any change at all, since the people on top designed the structure and feared change. rightly so, madison was well aware that slavery had to go, not on moral grounds but simply because commerce and industry didn't need slavery and would ultimately supplant the slave plantation grandees with city wage workers. but not while he lived!
aristotle thought that the important aspect of any polity is: who decides? in the usa, this question is not clear, because madison was a smart man, and he did achieve stability, so much so that civil war was necessary to replace slavery with wage workers.
today, usa is encumbered with a ridiculously obsolete constitution, that can be modified, but only by people whose position of power is established by the constitution. this effectively means that americans are not going to enjoy the 21st century much- they have a choice of revolution, or decay.
