i insist: democracy is the label for a political society ruled by its members, equally. in modern times, a society directed by regular and frequent referendum, under the control of the electorate exercised by effective and accessible citizen initiative.
'capitalism' is not even a political system, much less a democracy. it is a label for a society captured by wealth, ruled by control of wages and employment, and presence of a variety of employment contracts.
actual politics is of trivial importance, since the agents of wealth hold the offices of state.
and that is why plutocracy can function as a shadow government.
actual democracy does not happen in the federal sphere of the usa. there is literally zero co-relation between public opinion and public activity.* somewhat surprising since about half the states might be democracies if they were independent. why in the world do they not band together and establish federal democracy, or leave the federation?
because they are all ruled by a politician aristocracy. which would literally disappear if real democracy were imposed, at state or federal level. who will put themself out of work?
so if you actually want democracy, it must come from outside conventional politics. difficult!
on the other hand, conventional politics is destroying the planet. dilemma!
* princeton uni. did a large scale analysis, with this conclusion. but - this was for the economic lower 90%. for the top 10%, very good co-relation. madison would be proud of his work, he promised the constitutional convention that wealth would rule, and he has delivered, ever since.
