  1. it may be of some comfort to americans to remind themselves that several early caesars were moral degenerates, even psychopaths, and yet the empire flourished for several hundred years further. otoh, the romans were more pragmatic about impeachment- one moment master of the world, next a fountain of blood. i think the roman method will become popular, even as, and in response to, leaving office becomes undesired and dangerous. let's hope the usa is too weak in that era, to spread the bloodshed.

  2. i read 'decline and fall...' as a young lad, and it was educational. there were some colorful characters in roman history. but many years later, the lesson is more general: a society that concentrates wealth while eviscerating its populace ultimately is unable to defend either wealth or people. insert 'usa' here. china is not a threat, but usa rulers will call it a threat, to cover their own sins. china is a magnet for investment, which usa wealth has responded to heartily, eviscerating american industry. china builds all around the world, usa sends 'special forces ' instead, bandits and murderers in uniform. china is not the threat, folks, it's the usa. trump is not the disaster he might be. hasn't actually started a war yet, clinton promised one. his economic activities are pointed towards looting the economy of its last drops, presumably he will join the american elite on some private island. don't blame trump. blame your failure to get democracy. don't blame politicians, blame the electorate who are willing to be ruled by politicians. if you haven't got the spine to stand up and say "democracy, or else," then don't complain- evolution does not favor the dim and spineless.
