the american revolution was not 'progressive.' it was a device to save slavery from british judges, who were making it uneconomic through common law decisions. usa is a plutocracy, and every elite in history uses its power to get more, and give less. the shift of wealth from the 70's to now is a second 'gilded age,' and perfectly natural, it is the default condition created by the constitution. it was no accident that slave plantation plutocrats were 4 of the first 5 presidents, neither is trumps accession to power- the politician caste is so crooked and unconcerned about national justice that a political sabot was thrown into the list of presidents, simply because he was an outsider.
the political structure of the usa began rotten, by common notions of justice, and has gotten worse: 3 people are reputed to command half the wealth of the usa, and there is no sign of rebellion.
there is some ferment in the democratic party, and hope arises. don't get excited- there was more, much more ferment in the 1930's, but fdr put out the fire with some make-work programs. wouldn't have worked for long, but ww2 saved the plutocracy.
