  1. they didn't tell you much about marxism, did they? not much about slavery, either. or the expropriation of native lands. usa history is a children's coloring book, with no naughty bits. without history, a people are wanderers in a dark desert, and easily led where selfish and arrogant people want them to go. i wonder, does orwell get much respect in usa? '1984' was pointed at ussr, but they were children compared to the massage of history and ideas given to usans. but remember this - marxism failed to capture attention and respect, and those few nations that based their rule on his ideas were overwhelmed by capitalist nations, or in the case of china, flourished only when capitalism was allowed to direct activity.* that's because, in my view, marxism gave no thought to politics. politics is about power, and academics hate power, and avoid it. a brute with a gun rules bright and educated academics. one of mao's winning insights was encapsulated in one of his typical pithy sayings,  "power grows from the barrel of a gun." even so, he also knew that starving people don't obey guns. *deng xiao ping was a brilliant man, and saw the utility of pretending to be bending towards capitalism. his invitation to western nations, chiefly usa, to invest in china was political gung fu of the highest order. he needed the base created by mao, but between them they exposed the primitive capitalist societies as both brutal, and naive. xi jin ping intends to use their foundation for a reclamation of marxist principles, to create a new chinese socio-political model. too soon to say how successful he will be, brutal and naive has the most guns right now. but if the bombs don't fly, we are entering a new period of history.
