  2. the point of no return was the establishment of the constitution. it flash-froze the plutocracy of the day into a formal state that excluded democracy and installed a wealthy elite in power. much has happened since , but by no accident, the wealthy elite still direct the nation. every elite rots, out of simple greed and arrogance, and eventually it cannot command effective defense against exterior forces, since the soldiers either will not fight, or decide to run the nation for themselves. it took a long time for the roman empire to fall, usa will be quicker, as it has used hegemony rather than occupation. but the climate crisis will likely be the engine of destruction, econonic and social pressures can destroy a nation as easily as bombs. military rule will be termed 'temporary' as response to natural disaster, but continual disaster needs continual military rule.
