there is an underlying principle which directs the seeming chaos of the usg, and it's not difficult to understand: 'power tends to corrupt, and absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely.' - lord acton, more or less. the structure of the usg creates a small body of powerful people, and that body tends to become corrupt and more corrupt with the passage of time. there is inadequate countervailing action from the electorate, because of ignorance and misinformation.
this became evident in the activity of state governments in years around 1900, and stimulated what has come to be known as the 'progressive' movement. the result was that many states re-wrote their constitution with some or all of the features of democracy. california is the largest and most evident exemplar of this movement: it has and uses regularly, referendum, initiative and recall. if it were independent, it would be the sixth largest economy in the world- so democracy works well.
will it work well at the federal level? i think not. the federal constitution has frozen the usa in the plutocracy created by james madison, and the resulting society can only be changed by revolution.
trump is merely the latest 'caesar' in the history of new rome, perhaps not the worst, even- the pnac gang should be in prison for war-crime, which trump hasn't managed, yet. there will be more, for there is no way to change the usg, short of revolution.
