you might like to think about this: the only democracy in the world was surrounded in ww2, by nazis and fascists. but hitler did not invade. he pushed over france in weeks, but could not, or dare not, invade helvetian confederation. that's because the swiss had universal military training, and every ablle-bodied man had a military rifle in the closet. what's more, the monthly meeting for field and marksmanship competency was a strong bonding agent. both sides shot at the swiss, from time to time, but the swiss shot back, with great effect. in the usa, guns are only a tool for desperadoes, the notion of national community and mutual support never bloomed. might as well withdraw guns from the society. but that's not yer problem. yer problem is national psychosis, and no cure in sight.

@thalesnemo2841 northern half is flat, and swiss plan was to retreat to mountains in the south. but wasn't necessary. hitler was under time pressure, and decided he must deal with sovs first. as it turned out, that was last, too. he could have beaten the swiss, probably, if he had nothing else to do not easy, though.
