fdr was a very conventional president, even conservative. but he was faced with radical challenges which might have led to socialism and even democracy. he saved america as a plutocratic state by a few welfare and make-work programs, most of which are now gone. social security was the most important long term success. in 1938 the new deal was a spent force and the economy was sinking again. hitler saved america from socialism- the prosperity arising from munitions sales to allies began america's golden age. unemployment vanished, and so did any burning need for socialism. which is why i don't get excited by bernie or andy yang. america has been through worse economic challenges, and the constitution survived. it was written to prevent change and it works well. conditions are different now: climate crisis suggests more of the same is suicidal. if radical change is necessary, usa is soon extinct. unless more efficient societies can make up for usa fecklessness.
