the usa is not a democracy. it is an elective aristocracy whose members are so dependent on money to stay in office that they must placate donors. normally a few rich men. once you have grasped this, political activity in the usa starts to make sense. it is already an oligarchy "the rich" rule. but since it is a masked oligarchy, there is a great deal of informality in the operation. most of the politics that counts is simply chat at a party between donor and client.
no good purpose is served by referring to the usa as a democracy. doing so is either naive, or cynical. there is no reference to democracy in the constitution, "we, the people," was simply a lie, and at the time referred only to about 10% of the male population. in discussions about establishing the constitution, madison was explicit that its purpose was to make democracy impossible. with success- more people can vote, but the rich still rule, and will continue to rule until people stop talking about american democracy, and actually get some.

who will watch the watchers? an eternal problem, for which there is only one solution: democracy, and its consequent requirement of public and timely record of public activity. no secrets.
usa is vulnerable to coups and civil war, simply because the constitution does not establish democracy. the people are trained to passivity, and do not have organs to make their wishes decisive. the swiss have citizen initiative, small professional army, and a national militia. this has supported an independent and cohesive state for about 150 years, the only democracy in the world. usa since vietnam has only professional soldiers, no initiative, and a long history of mutual suspicion of the latest immigrants, and a festering sore of racial history. a coup would be welcomed by enough to make military rule easy. but the civil government will remain in place, while the plutocrats fear the generals, and can buy them. as they should- it won't be president gabbard in 2020, but it might be generalissimo gabbard in 2040.
