if usa were a democracy, national service would make sense. but it isn't. which is why the draft was stopped. the gummint's war in vietnam provoked enough commotion that a professional army, more clearly, a mercenary army, was thought necessary.. and to this day, they are the fist of the usa rulers. national service is a nonsense in a nation of civilians, who are not citizens. draft soldiers in such a society are just slave soldiers. and that is a dangerous expedient, they commonly decide to elevate a popular leader to the purple.
