'the purpose of the senate is to make sure that democracy does not happen.' not a quote, but close paraphrase of madison's promotion of his constitution to the enabling convention. usans are told endlessly that voting for politicians is democracy. it is not. voting for referenda and initiative is democracy. you ain't got it. i'm pretty sure you will never have democracy. it needs 'citizen-quality people' unwilling to be ruled by politicians, or generals or priests. what you have is elective oligarchy.. by no accident, the mechanics of election make the officers of state intensely solicitous of wealth, private and corporate. effectively, plutocracy. mr hartmann asks, how can we fix this? if you are going to alter the constitution at all, why not make the basic change to democracy? leaving power in the hands of politicians will accomplish nothing at all. they will still be bought. but how can you change the constitution? you cannot. you have no power of citizen initiative. what you can do, is threaten revolution. but i think that is too hard for you.
