  1. they are not really sides. think of them as gangs. neither has any interest in the welfare of the nation. they offer bribes to segments of the population, in return for votes, but often do not deliver, often have no power to deliver. call it elective aristocracy, in service to wealth. democracy is something else. california would be a democracy, if it was independent. it is run by referendum, and under oversight by initiative and recall. really, the people of california would be better off if they left the union.
