  1. as the republicans drift right, it pays the democrats to drift right in step, scooping up middle voters and even mild-rights. this is the voting mechanism structure. democrats would be insane to do any different. eventually, the people will be driven to rebellion for lack of champions, the resulting violence will scare 'reform' and the the cycle repeats. there are presumably intelligent and educated people in usa, but they see life as better by chasing money and using it to buy politicians. so usa will join the austro-hungarian empire in history, as a polity that could not change for lack of imagination.
