aristotle said the essential aspect of every society is simply: "who decides?" this is not "who rules," necessarily, but the difference is not significant.
in a democracy, the electorate decides. the usa is not a democracy, it is an elective oligarchy. for historical reasons, elective aristocracy is better. and the 'aristocracy' is dependent on money, so functionally, the usa is a genuine plutocracy. it will remain so until the constitution is replaced.
there is no visible interest in doing so, so plutocracy will remain until the vitality of the nation is drained, at which point some military leader will announce that he [or she, general gabbard might have a new role to play] is taking the civil government into temporary guidance.
talking about 'democracy in the workplace' is a nonsense. in the first place, many don't work, are they not part of the nation? more fundamentally, democracy means rule by the citizens, not rule by labor leaders. hi-jacking the 'good' word is commonplace, but still unconvincing.

let's start with the basics- who has the power to 'do.' not you, an individual, out side your personal space, nor the entire body of the people, for the usa is not a democracy. the government has the power to 'do,' and if you have money, you can buy the government. but they are expensive, so only the rich can 'do,' outside of government office.
aristotle said the important feature of society is simply, "who decides?" he was right then, and still is.
so when people tell you about their grand ideas, just ask, "have you got money, or power, or is it wishful thinking, or are you running some kind of scam? the last two are almost universally the reply.
