  1. the scandis are trying out democratic socialism for us, with mixed success. one problem is that they don't have real democracy, only elective aristocracy. this is true in many nations- democracy is a must-have word, but doesn't come naturally. it is almost a universal lie, in varying degrees. the swiss come close to democracy, but they are being squeezed out of it by the e. u. getting democracy in the federal government seems possible, since the original progressive movement, circa 1900, did re-write the constitution of many states to democracy, california a notable example.

  2. the important part of the capitalist system is first, it's not a system, and a better label is 'greed' in big suits. if you don't like the results, you have to create a system. the tool of creation is normally the will of the new military master, but if you have read about dictatorship and are unimpressed , i recommend establishing democracy. the rule of the citizens, expressed in referendum, initiative and recall, is the opposite to dictatorship, and tends to offer a habitable life to all, while allowing some variation in performance and reward. getting democracy is hard. but living without tends to shorten lives.
