i started suggesting, "we should get democracy" back in the late 60's. almost everyone said, 'but, we've got it!" in fact usa is not a democracy, nor is anyone else*. but near universal acceptance that rule by politicians is democracy means homer sap is doomed. any elite rule will put personal advancement ahead of general welfare. *the swiss have a case, but i think they are losing it, due to ceaseless pressure from the eu society with which they must deal.
