nato is a military alliance against ussr. now it is also an engine of imperial expansion for the usa. putin has decided to resist. not clear if this is better or worse than submission. it is clear that many will die because usa wants to own ukraine, and putin doesn't want that kind of neighbor. the situation is somewhat similar to the cuba excitement between kruschev and kennedy. that was resolved when usa withdrew nukes from turkey, and krushchev turned the ships around. but now usa feels it is able to ignore the threat of nuclear war. probably they can. but the cost of losing this bet is so high that sane people would not make it. the government of usa is insane.
