foundation myths must be dispelled, since many or most are at least thinly entwined, from childhood indoctrination.
but reality is simple. the fundamental question of every society is, "who decides?"
or so aristotle thought, and wrote. seems good to me. let's extend;
if every adult member of a society participates in decision, it is a democracy.
if only a few, then it is 'oligarchy,' which simply means, 'rule by a few.' there are flavors of oligarchy, depending on which 'few' rule. commonly a group of army commanders, sometimes a group of bureaucrats. either group might be responsive to bribes, and their patrons might be a [hidden] few.
capitalism is not a political system, it is just a euphemism for an oligarchy very responsive to bribery. the rich patrons of the bureaucrats rule not through debate, but with a phone-call.
if you do not examine who decides and how, all discussion is pointless. you must turn attention to rulers, not talkers.
