  1. as far as i know, only helvetia maintains a reasonable approximation of democracy, and it is visibly corroding under the stress of e.u. encirclement. greece, otoh, doesn't pretend. everyone in the west is told daily that rule by politicians is 'democracy.' but the word itself gives them the lie: it means a society 'ruled by the citizens.' california would be a very good approximation of a democracy, if independent: referendum, initiative direct the state in large matters, and in constant use. a few other usa states come close, but elsewhere, the people do not rule. and they are not really citizens, civilian would be polite. you would think a notable greek would understand these distinctions, but yf found the greek state to small a stage for his talents, and contents himself with being a celebrity 'international.'
