'average person' is likely to be ill-educated, possibly dim, possibly sly and selfish. just look at president trump. very average guy, with a rich sociopath for a father. my father saw a very faint blossoming of socialism in the 30's, and there was a certain amount of military welfare in the 45-60 period. but still usa has returned to a 'gilded age.' that is the default position of the usa constitution, its design center. without constitutional change, progress is illusory.
