democracy was originally a society in which the citizens directed the activities of the state through the processes of referendum and initiative. it evolved from the experience of athens over a long period of time. democracy came to switzerland over a long period too. in both societies, the result was not smooth or pretty. but the core was similar for both, and expressed in the greek phrase demos kratia: the citizens rule. democracy is a society in which the citizens rule. usa is not such a society. it will never be such a society, until the people decide they have had enough of elite rule. this looks like never. just too dumb.
