when people do stupid things, it may be that you do not understand their motivation. a political party is a business, run by professionals for their own profit. if 'the lesson' is that they are going to lose their jobs they will refuse to learn. and they are right to do so- the 'new blues' are a minority, and junior in party power, and may come to nothing. the structure of usa society is obsolete. it is largely responsible for the relative decline in american power, and the increasing decay at home. i can see no way to stop the decline.

you could try democracy, if you knew what it was.

voting for people is not democratic, that's just aristocracy with ballots replacing bullets, elections replacing civil war. democracy, is referendum, initiative, and recall. none of which occurs in the federal constitution.

a reasonable idea, but people who grow up in the usa don't think like citizens of a democracy. they are clients of political gangs, and have no hope beyond getting a favorable gang in power. @trusty_bear-v1h

the dems used to be the party of slavery, then jimcrow and the kkk. they created the viet nam war. they have always been corrupt....but the problem in the end is the ignorance of the american electorate- raised to be the clients of political parties, instead of citizens of a democracy. @J Jackson

in the early 1900's, the real 'progressive' movement re-wrote about half the state constitutions with varying degrees of actual democratic functions. california is the most obvious, with rule by referendum, initiative and re-call, all in use as required. the need is equally obvious at the federal level. but modern 'progressives,' in the democratic party, have no notion of democracy. the limit of their aspiration is getting a kind master in office. slave minds deserve corrupt masters.

this is thinking outside the box, true. but go a step farther, and you will realize the wealthy elite will always have a political party as their agent. they can buy one, and will. indeed, nowadays there are a few people who can from their own funds buy a party. koch bros. come to mind, and that adelson creature. so the repubs are theirs, currently, and you can't get in. perhaps the 'tea party' was an attempt, from the lower-class lizard brain demographic.

'politician' is a profession in the usa. there are two guilds, and plenty of 'hired guns' whose purpose is to extract a living from herding the electoral cattle. neither guild is cheerful about young, active vocational competition. why should they be, it threatens their livelihood? this situation is normal, if you don't live in a democracy.
