  1. the only reliable check is democracy, which is why madison made sure the usa did not have a constitution establishing democracy. and that is why revolution is necessary, if you want substantive change.  @DavidJ222

  3. there are parallels between rome and usa, and it's worth talking about them. but the fatal flaw in the usa is the lack of citizen initiative. the state was purposely designed to be ruled by the rich, and the levers of power were kept out of the reach of the common people. so too, in rome. in rome the result was aggressive war, as the yeoman farmer was driven off the land by the giant slave estates, and ended up as a city dependent, or a soldier bringing land and slaves into the hands of the upper class. any number of poor americans have entered the services, to get that vocational education that usa does not provide, and consequently fight the wars of banditry that america has been engaged in since the 50's. and there's nothing you can do about it, because there is no citizen initiative. madison was protecting slavery, and it worked- only civil war was available to change the constitution in this regard. and only revolution will save americans from penury now, and endless mercenary war. quite like rome, although roman farmers didn't have the advantage of historical example.
