  1. china has its share of superstition, but has not been much troubled by religion. india, otoh, has too much. this is not the only reason for the massive difference in development, but it must be a large part. and it's incurable in any useful time span, since politicians find religion of lasting use. they reinforce one another. perhaps, like the austro-hungarian empire, india as a single political entity is dysfunctional. partition would allow some relatively modern states to join the international world.
