i am confident that putin wishes he didn't have to shoot his way to ukrainian neutrality. but he sees clearly that usa intends to own all the world. they said so, "nato can go anywhere." putin's goals are more modest: he wants a buffer state between him and the evil empire. russia is not entirely isolated, prc is sympathetic and they are a power bloc by themself. the modi government appears to be conducting an anti-prc foreign policy, which seems strange - modi might get something from it, but india will not. perhaps not so strange.
