  1. The west knows Ukraine can not deliver a knockout blow to Russia. But they want to supply whatever it takes for Ukraine to hit into Russian territories for many reasons. But the west needs to convince enough locals to justify expenses, keep local concern about spending so much on Ukraine down, encourage EU residents to accept frozen toes this winter. For that they need badly something to show, and Russia gave them a free gift in Kharkov. The west will supply anything and everything, including hiring volunteers from many parts of the world with something as simple as a green card. To prevent escalation, save lives at the end, it is necessary to become very serious and deny every little bitty itsy win to Ukraine and finish this war. It is way more efficient to be nice after you win, than during the fight.
