Its speculated that romans and other ancient civilization actually were engaged in slavery wayy nore than the later empires because romans like extravagant things and giant buildings so they used many many slaves to build them and for either purposes , civilization started in the middle east so slavery probably started there too but by no means did the middle eastern empires as individual entities enslave the same amount of people as Western and European ones and if they did it would be because they existed for longer periods than western civilizations

Well they didnt have much power in north africa and the middle east as they had in Europe since many of their territories in the mena were partially autonomous and enslaving muslims would've led to many revolts so probably Europeans
