@Kevin Cronk It was named after a battle in crimea that took place around that time, Ethiopians admired the russian empire. Russians werent active in Ethiopia at the time tho.

Abyssinia controlled both massawa (a port in the redsea) and zeila (a port on the indian ocean) so they definitely played a big part the ottomans would later take massawa to solidify their rule over the redsea this speaks about its importance .

@Sean Mcloughlin It was well known that ethiopia was an orthodox state much befkre thr Portuguese arrived tho there were even attempts made by rome to unify the Ethiopian church with rome but it was unsuccessful, the Portuguese were heavily invested in Ethiopia after the war many jesuits arrived to convert the population and letters were sent back and forth between ethiopia and Portugal, there was even a Portuguese town called fremona, the Portuguese would remain in Ethiopia until they were finally kicked out by emperor fasil more than a century later.

The short answer is they couldn't, imagine occupying Ethiopia with 13k soldiers its impossible, the only reason twedros wasnt able to win to start with his severe lack of popularity(he was able to muster only 4k soldiers ,while minlink the later emperor would be able to muster100k) and a betrayal by the second powerful man in Ethiopia after twedros , called yohannes , the british promised him they would take out twedros and leave, so he helped them out and even escorted them to where twedros stayed at, mind u that defeating twedros didnt mean winning against the whole of Ethiopia Britain would've loved to seize the source of the nile, hospitable land and most of the eritrean coast (which was under the Ethiopian vassal state of aussa) but the numerous Ethiopian lords and nobles would've made it a nightmare.

3:38 The oromos didnt come from Southern Ethiopia but kenya, they got to northern Ethiopia after they fought some southern Ethiopian nilotic tribes , several Ethiopian emperors have campaigned in southern Ethiopia(since the times of axum) and non of them came across the oromos until the 15th century(the start of the oromo migration), some oromos are still living in kenya.

Well most of eritrea was Ethiopian territory until minilik gave it up. plus the small part that wasnt Ethiopias was only taken by the ottomans from Ethiopia, so yeah it was Ethiopian in the end.

Yekuno amlak seized power in an uprising not peacefully and he most likely killed the last zagwe king za il maknun (also known by many other names) There is some texts that say yemrehanna kristos (a zagwe king who lived before yekuno amlak was born) received Devine revelations , that a king called yekuno amlak will take over and restore the axumites , but the sources arent contemporary to either the times of yemrehanna kristor nor anytime in the reign of the zagwe dynasty but a later 14th-15th century text whichclaims to be authentic but most probably isnt.

2:40 this claim seems far fetched , the sassnids were barely able to win against a numerically inferior army of masruq (who was independent but paied tribute to axum), saying that the sassanids were able to block the indian trade is unrealistic, the sassanids didnt even fight against axum itself(which had a professional standing army unlike masruq) and their navy was basically nonexistent while axums navy is older than the sassanid empire itself, axum wouldve collapsed if the redsea and indian ocean , obviously that didnt happen and the axumites kept both the red sea and indian ocean trade for much much later than that (actually even after the rise of islam), the archeological evidence from the time confirms that axum still traded with both rome and india at the time, so i highly doubt the statement in the video, axum probably stopped buying silk from asia and selling it to rome after that (this was what sparked the disagreement between the sassanids and axum).

Actually what it was referring to was the religious conflict that happened between copts (which includes ethiopia) and eastern orthdoxs (which includes Byzantium/rome) , it ended with the recognition of zagwe dynasty ethiopia being recognized as the leader/protector of the copts a title which Byzantium held tightly before, so according to yemerhanna kristos(emperor of ethiopia) the prophesy was completed, plus shortly after Byzantium would suffer the consequences of the 4th crusades and ottoman conquest that would make it much weaker than ethiopia, mind u that by the 14th century it was a significant military power pretty much the sole power in the region because they crushed everyone else even later the ottomans wouldn't be able to conquer ethiopia while they succeeded in subduing rome/Byzantium.

Probably because their history is very speculative at best , little is written about them and their lands were throughly conquered and integrated into the larger abyssinia so we dont even know how anything worked in their lands , they had kings but that about it nothing else is known.

He wasnt a barbarian , he was born into a noble family, he sure didnt get his rightful land and property ,due to other nobels seizing it after his fathers death, but he grew with his noble uncle and served the then greatest noble until he rebelled.

As a state tho Ethiopia beats japan since Ethiopia or rather abyssinia was established in 1000bc while japan is a few centuries later and doesnt have any records to prove it(its more mythological than historical) , unlike Ethiopia where there is few but enough inscriptions to confirm its establishment around 1000bc or earlier.

The axumites were predecessor of the solomonics not Ethiopia or abyssinia , since axumites referred to them selfs as habesha (their land habeshat) and the naem Ethiopia was first used to refer to axum by their 4th century king ezana ,after he conquered kush and pretry much took its name, the axumites were probably on the more middle Eastern side genetically ,but ethiosemitc speakers are still their direct descendants.

The empires name was actually habashat/abyssinia. Axum is just the name of a city state that grew phenomenally, it only stayed as a capital of the empire for like 600 years after that there were 2 more capitals called jamera and kubar according to arabic sources .

No the axumite dont seem to have forced any kind of conversion, it wouldn't make sense for a trading empire with inhabitants from different parts of the wolrd to force Christianity it would be bad for their trade , well except in himyar , they went wild there. arguably speaking tho them not forcing Christianity was theri doom, because the pagan lands inhabited by ethnic axumites (ethiosemitic speakers) would convert to islam(creating the first sultanet in the horn of africa) by force in the 8-9th century and that proved catastrophic for the late axumute empire, the same sultanet (called makhzumi/shewa) would help yekuno amlak (the first solomonic monarch) take over zagwe, so i think that makes them even.

The place hat gave birth has already been pin pointed in southern Ethiopia, dont forget that Ethiopia and yemen were very well connected and actually were a unified state several times (firat time being the sabaean kingdom then the axumites), yemen doesnt even have the type of forests that allow for the native growth of coffee, not even at ancient times.

Not really, it was either the late axumites(who did control the areas where coffe originated) or the sultanet of shewa (an Ethiopian successor state of axum) they had a monopoly on the redsea trade while they existed and both of them werent Somali. The shewans were southern ethiosemitic speakers if u are wondering. they still exist(in central and southern ethiopia),although significantly depopulated by the oromo migration. they are overwhelmingly muslims but abyssinians/Ethiopians nontheless.

Saba was created in yemen and lasted between 1200bc-200ad they had control ober northern Ethiopia between probably 1000bc and 500bc (cant be confirmed because of the abundance of sabean temples,pottery and artifacts up to central Ethiopia) But they did have control over nejran (southern saudiarabian town) but its historical yemeni , saduiarabia and yemen even went to war over it.

Yes she was some where between 1000bc and 500bc northern Ethiopia and yemen used to be one under the sabaean kingdom (which was kind of a theocracy with a few monarchs here and there) the Ethiopian church got the stuff heavily mixed up tho thats for sure, saba as a kingdom would last until 200ad when himyar and axum(Ethiopia) would destroy it and partition the territory although both would claim complete dominance over the entire yemen.
