  1. wrt Yorktown and Enterprise being built to a treaty-max 27,000 ton design. My hunch is, with a more capable and survivable design in hand, it would have been used for both Hornet and Essex, so Essex would have been in commission in December of 41. re "survivable", the weakest point in the Yorktowns was, to save weight, they did not have staggered boiler and engine rooms. The lack of survivable powerplants lead directly to the loss of both Yorktown and Hornet. The 27,000 Essex design eliminated that vulnerability.
