@rogervila7353 That is the theory I always see: it makes it possible to shorten the armor belt. But the French ships had the two forward turrets widely spaced, so a golden BB would not take out both turrets. That wide spacing would reduce the benefit. I'm sure the designers could show you how many tons they saved doing that, but as the French returned to a conventional layout with Gascogne and the Brits with the KGV, they apparently decided it was not worth hindering the ship's functionality to that degree.

@bkjeong4302 Interesting thought, basically the battleship building holiday imposed by the Washington treaty be made permanent, and respected by all parties until they all have an epiphany that carriers are more powerful over a wider area of sea. Now, would that also include scrapping of all the older BBs, or would they be retained, and spend the war providing invasion fire support and convoy escort? The old Battle Cruisers, with the speed to keep up with the carriers, would still be formidable weapons in gun fights like during the Solomons campaign.
