  1.  @dreadnoughtic4324  correct. A compressed air purge system was installed in USN big guns after a particularly lurid turret fire that killed over 30 in the turret and handling room. Prior to that fire, the crewmen were simply told to look in the barrel for flames and embers, before ramming the next round. That same fire resulted in the USN enclosing hoists in trunks with flash doors on both ends, for the first time.
