@readingrailroadfan7683 Baltimore was laid down in May 41. Cleveland was laid down in July 40, and launched in November 41. I suspect it was a matter of familiarity with the Cleveland design, they knew everything below the weather deck would go together OK.

@AlmiranteBrown-rf9qv outside of the Independence, seems the only other candidates are the Colossus and Majestic classes. After the war they were used by the navies of France, the Netherlands, India, Argentina, Brazil, Canada. Australia. Many were upgraded with modestly angled flight decks. I can complain about their lack of speed, compared to Independence, but you can't argue with their utility to other navies after the war.
