  1. Changed their appearance so they didn't look so threatening? iirc, when Sheer's recon plane spotted convoy HX 84, it reported the convoy was unescorted. In reality, it's only escort was Jervis Bay, a converted liner. As it happened, there was a group of four ex-US DDs that were also en route to the UK, from Halifax, traveling separately. It crosses my mind that, if those four DDs had left Halifax with HX 84, Sheer may have gone off looking for easier prey.
