@BigPapaKaiser My suspicion is, beside the usual assertion of better visibility, is that the officers had always stood in the open, since the days of sail. It probably took a while for the officers to get used to the idea of being enclosed at all. Same thing with airplane pilots. Many clung to the open cockpit, in spite of the discomfort, because they claimed they could better "feel" how the aircraft was performing.
