@toddwebb7521 the ST stories first requirement was to establish danger. Quickest way to do that was kill off "Ensign Expendable", within the first five minutes. The red shirt beat was not really established until part way through the first season. At first gold and blue shirts were equal opportunity targets. There is a mildly amusing song on youtube "Red Shirt Death" by Sidewalk Furniture.

@bjarkih1977 yes. Two that received a lot of publicity in the 70s were Bill Lear, of Learjet fame, and Wallace Minto. Minto licensed his design to Nissan in 1972. Lear got as far as installing his turbine in a city bus.
