@tenarmurk with the development of cannon, came the development of "chain shot" and "bar shot". As the names imply, chain shot was two balls with a length of chain between them, the idea being the chain would be stretched between the balls in flight and tear out rigging. Bar shot was the same idea, with the potential of the bar being strong enough to break a spar.
