  1. The 12" was an attempt at reducing weight and cost. The USN did not switch to smokeless until after Iowa was built. Iowa had a major role in schooling BuOrd about the differences between black or brown powder and smokeless, with, iirc, one 12" and two 8" blowing their muzzles and chases off.

  2.  @stashaszezlenko9601  Yes, the superimposed turrets. Another gift from the mind of Joseph Strauss at BuOrd. The same Strauss who clung to outdated notions of typical combat ranges and forced the USN to cling to the 14" gun for the Tennessee class, when the 16"/45 was available.
