wrt the question about the relative value of a WWI vintage destroyer vs an AMC, I recently reread "Fifty Ships That Saved The World". A group, iirc 4, of those destroyers were making their way from Halifax to the UK when they received radio traffic from Jervis Bay, which was squaring off against Scheer. The USN had handed over those whips with full magazines and torpedo tubes. The DDs rang up flank speed to aid Jervis Bay, but arrived too late. Can't help but wonder what if the DDs had departed Halifax with the convoy Jervis Bay was escorting? The British crews only had a brief orientation on the US weapons before heading to the UK, so the battle with Scheer may have been chaotic. On the other hand, I have read that Scheer's recon plane had spotted the convoy and reported to Scheer that it was not escorted at all. If that spotter plane had seen four destroyers with the convoy, would Scheer have attacked?
