@kitowen7714 "Pom Pom" generally refers to a series of autocannons produced first by Maxim-Nordenfelt, then Vickers, and used by the Boers in the Boer war and the British into WWII. The nickname "Pom Pom" is from the sound the guns made when fired.

@Conelead The Japanese preference seems to have been to land a knockout blow on the first go, so availability of a 5th carrier might have resulted in pounding Midway even heavier. I'll counter your alternate reality with this: suppose the three US carriers and all their squadrons coordinated, like they did at Coral Sea, so they all close in on the Japanese force at the same time, rather trickling in, or missing the scrap entirely? Then Zuikaku goes to the bottom two years early.

@Conelead sure, that could have worked out in the favor of the Japanese. The US could have changed it's doctrine on defending carriers from air attack earlier, so that Yorktown would have been cruising in close company with Enterprise and Hornet, so that Yorktown would be protected by the combined AA umbrella and CAP, rather than it's own, much smaller, resources. The bottom line is the USN found the Japanese force first. If the US strike had not been so tragically botched, the bombers and fighters had followed the course the torpedo planes set, the slaughter of the Japanese force would have been epic.
