I am inclined to agree with Ghosn: the merger is being driven by MITI, probably as a means to "safe jobs" and/or bail out the banks that hold Nissan paper, by giving them access to Honda's checkbook. It certainly is not for Honda's benefit. If Honda wanted a piece of Nissan's market share, all they would need to do is wait until Nissan went toes up. Then they would gain some share of Nissan's customer base, simply by virtue of still being in business.
