I wonder how much of a role management's mind set plays in their loss of volume in China. In the US, the "big three" have been losing market share for 50 years. The US is cluttered with closed/torn down big three plants. Ford, and VW have been open about their disinterest in major market segments. Farley, having dropped all of Ford's conventional passenger cars, has said he wants to get out of the two row CUV segment, because brisk competition prevents him charging as much of the cars as he wants to. VW's CFO said, a couple years ago, they don't care about market share. Both companies are openly pursuing a policy of price escalation so they take more money off of each of their shrinking number of customers. That business model does not seem sustainable to me, but they continue to close plants and lay people off, to adjust to their shrinking volume.
