My dad was a corporal in the artillery during the war. The enlisted guys in his battery all had carbines. Always cracked dad up, when he would be walking along and a group of infantry guys would see him from a distance, and mistake him for an officer, because of the carbine. As the carbine was originally intended to be capable of full auto fire, and later was produced with that option, and combined a shorter barrel and lighter cartridge, can it be argued that the carbine was actually the first assault rifle?

Peter Egan wrote a column for Road & Track some 35 years ago on the same topic of collecting, in his case, cars. His inspiration was when a total stranger called him at home one evening demanding to be told which cars to collect. Peter tried to explain, just as Ian does, that you collect what interests you. When I hear a "what do I buy" question about collectables, the asker is either looking for "collectables" that he wants to make a big pile of money off of, or he is trying to impress other people. He obviously doesn't care about the actual item, because, if he did, he would not need to ask the question because he would gravitate toward something specific. If I was going to "collect" something, it would be some of the fake hack jobs, like a couple Ian has reviewed. because I find it amusing what some charlatans try to pass off on the unaware. The problem, of course, is the charlatans don't price their wares like the worthless hack jobs they are.

That's interesting. My dad was in the artillery, and was issued a carbine. He commented that the carbine wasn't worth a hoot with grenades, compared to a Garand, because of the weak cartridge.

People are the same. People buy discount gas, instead of Top Tier, and wonder why their engines carbon up. When I sold consumer electronics, people would come in the store and the first thing out of their mouth is "what's the cheapest VCR (or camcorder, or stereo receiver) you have?"
