It's funny how the stereotypes of Germans includes logical and pragmatic yet they abandon nuclear in favour of coal and gas while aiming to take meaningful action of climate change.

@tsartomato the greens are like most parties of the fringe of the political map. They only care what science has to say when it agrees with them and will ignore it the rest of the time. The fact is the Green party in Germany and others like it around the world are a major reason fossil fuel industries like coal have survived so long.
14
@محمدالامريكي-ج9م it's not dangerous AF. It is literally the safest energy source per gWh. And yes they is radioactive waste generated in the process, however is it both low volume and containable. Unlike the large volumes of CO2 fossil fuels release into the atmosphere. Even the solar industry doesn't have proper recycling processes in place. Worth remembering that solar panels contain toxic materials like lead and cadmium, so it's not a trivial matter.
14
@ChristopherSeuken if you're worried about long-term storage of waste, you guys have Finland just across the Baltic. Don't buy the hysteria, there are systems in place to deal the waste.

@scottwarthin1528 so your plan would be to cross your fingers and hope we can develop some new technology in time? Hope that resources for it aren't a big problem and industry can ramp up in time to meet demand? That's your idea of a solution? Nuclear is here now and it works. It's low CO2 (second only to wind) and it works around the clock rain, hail or shine.
2
The basic reason is they turned off their nuclear power plants and bet billions on green energy. Of course that didn't work, either from an economic or environmental perspective, so now they need brown coal and natural gas to keep the lights on.
2
Because that claim is made up and if they had to deal with every made up anti-nuclear claim they would be there all day.

@userumbleandgettr4freespee501 Nord 2 started before these sanctions began. You could very well say the US is disrespecting Germany by trying to dictate their economic policy. Edit: the whole "rules against unacceptable behaviour" is a bit rich coming from the US. There did nothing of consequence when MBS murdered Jamal Khashoggi. It smacks of self-interested hypocrisy to pretend they care now.
1
@userumbleandgettr4freespee501 so murdering dissidents is perfectly acceptable as long as they're still "doing good"? So then you're not really worried about the "rules" as you claimed in your previous comment. The rules only matter when it is in America's interest but not Germany's? Is that it? However if it's realpolitik you're arguing for then Germany's interest into Nord Stream 2 makes perfect sense and they should be keen to see it though. Is MBS doing good? Heard this about many a dictator before from Al-Asard to Gaddafi. Do you think the people of Yemen would agree as MBS turns the country into his own private Vietnam? The people of Qatar as he tries to strong arm any criticism of his regime into silence?

@userumbleandgettr4freespee501 mate it's not the 1950s. The EU doesn't need the US to keep it safe from Russia. They have 10 times the economy, 4 times the population, a million more trained military personnel, more and better equipment. Russia it's taking Berlin again anytime soon.
1
Half the US population still think it's 1950. The world has changed but their thinking hasn't changed with the times.
1
The weapons thing is only an issue for so-called "rogue states" using heavy water reactors.
1
Ukraine wants German gas to go though their territory because then they get transit fees.
1
@userumbleandgettr4freespee501 because you're still living in a cold war world that the rest of the world moved on from decades ago.
1
They are. There's a new one from Azerbaijan and another in the works from Egypt and Israel.
1
@dcabana1 fun fact: coal fired power plants release more radiation into the air than nuclear.
1
Narr wouldn't be that hard. I believe they have already done a similar thing elsewhere in the European gas pipeline system.
1
@chancellorpalpatine1019 because yay climate change? Yay brown coal?
1
Germany uses brown coal which is second only to peat bogs as the worst for CO2 to gWh. The planet is paying the price for Germany's anti-nuclear hysteria.
1
Yeah, that was dumb. They should've used de Gaulle's NATO exit during the cold war.
1
Hopes and dreams don't keep the lights on today and they don't deal with climate change over the next decade. Germany chose to turn off it's low CO2 nuclear reactors and now is needing to fill the gap with brown coal and natural gas.
1
@cx5307 you can use surplus power to generate hydrogen gas during periods low demand or high supply which is burn at peak demand periods. There are pilot programs already. As to your other point, I don't think it matters what complements what best. It's about what's best for the planet, and right now that's a low CO2 source which can work around the clock rain, hail or shine. The only energy source that ticks these boxs is nuclear. Yes battery technology may improve out of sight, solar panels may one day be available to store their energy and effective fusion could come online one day but people have been saying that for the past 30 years and I for one am not willing to bet the planet on that happening in time.
1
Is it worth isolating a key ally to sell a bit of extra gas? You also have the likely prospect of touching off a trade war with the EU which won't benefit either party.
1
@quantumeseboy didn't work too well last time.
1
The revived brown coal too.
1
What a great way to lose allies.
1
It's one of the reasons many countries are starting to move away from using it.
1
@badluck5647 does anyone want to live next to a power station of any kind? Same for airports. Actually now I think about it I've seem people oppose school and places of worship because they don't want it too close to their house.

@userumbleandgettr4freespee501 does he read much Dr. Seuss on his podcast?
