The Bamboo cutter maybe my favourite character in all of mythology. Gets the free gold perk, doesn't question it, doesn't brag, just rolls with it.

@vintheguy not sure if that goes in the plus or negative column.

@vintheguy so from a moral perspective they're among the less worst and from a enjoyment perspective they are the best choice because if "there is only war", you're best off enjoying war.
9
@vintheguy well of all the terrible reasons to kill in 40k, the Orks are probably some of the least culpable.
7
@vintheguy the question is does conventional human morality apply them? They were designed and built as a weapon and thrown straight into the biggest war in the 40k universe. Their gods, their culture and their own biology is tied to war. Is a lion immoral for taking down a gazelle? Is a bomb immoral for exploding? Can you have morality without choice?
7
Got a source on that? The last I heard they mostly came from the Danube area.
6
@vintheguy no religious reason? You do know Gork and Mork are a thing, right? They do what they were designed to do. They are not really anymore immoral than a hurricane.

@AugieVanThule Martin was a conscientious objector. He didn't "dodge the draft". He had his claim heard and it was found to be true.

@paulwagner688 industrial age Britain was also proper grimdark. There's a video by 40k youtuber Lutin09 about the horrors of hive cities in the setting and he starts it with a quote that is about the best grimdark thing I've ever heard, the quote is from Charles Dickens describing the factories of Britain of the time.

@mannofdober873 he has common sense, which tbf is definitely a super power in 40k.

So question, how much inspiration do you think Orwell took from this play when writing 1984? Kat's husband sounds like a worse version of O'Brian.

@Demicleas I think the fact that Cain has Jurgen as his aid speaks to Cain's practical nature. Jurgen is an exceptional soilder. He has the physical strength to carry a bulky anti-tank weapon around with little effort, the speed to keep up with Cain while carrying it. Great marksmanship, brave to the point that both Amberley and Cain wonder if it's actually bravery or ignorance and despite people's assessments (including Cain's) has enough brains to frequently offer solutions to problems. 99 times out of 100 in 40k nobody would give him the time of day because he's a blank but Cain did, long before he knew about Jurgen's special ability. I think it's what makes Cain such a good character. His survival (and success) are a product of good decision making, which itself comes from his character traits.

@vintheguy the were designed as a weapon so their morally is the equivalent to a simple AI following its programming or an animal driven by its instincts to hunt. Empires like the Imperium and the Necron have some agency, the Eldar caused their problems, the worst aspects of Tau society are self-inflicted and unnecessary and Chaos is it's own ball of issues. The Nids maybe in a similar situation to the Orkz but much of what makes them tick is still unknown.

I disagree that the "everyman" is necessarily a male character. Ripley from Alien is an every(wo)man protagonist. Everyman but just mean your average person in that context and I don't think it's gender specific.

@seraby7151 he pushed hard for the Sicilian expedition, he wasn't that smart.

@jofreewax7845 Big Brother isn't a character but. "He's" an figure the government of Oceania uses to personify itself. Also if he was a real character then he's not really a Gary Stu because he's not omnipotent, the government security services are. He's achievements like production numbers are a fiction. He's also not so young that he's role as head of the government would be unrealistic to have achieved. Edit: just to add, the love is forced and coerced, a Stu would have been loved without due cause.

@t850terminator until someone messes with his museum. That said he thinks genestealers are great for a prank so he's clearly able to make his own fun.

Not an unreasonable response.

While I don't condone beastiality (never thought I'd feel the need to say that), at least Loki's shananigans seem somewhat consensual. Zeus could learn a thing or two.

I hate Gauls....

"Same accent as every other Englishman in the 17th century" The English have a frankly ridiculous amount of different accents.
