Given his immediate situation, it's rather logical that he's not lamenting his victim (he killed her and can't change that any more) but rather himself (considering the bleak "future" before him). And given that in his mind she may have even provoked the crime, it would be strange if he suddenly started empathizing with her after just sinking into much deeper shit than he was in already. So in sum, he did something he regrets a lot, tried to cover his ass as best as he could, failed, and is now suffering from the consequences of his actions. That doesn't make him some hardened psycho murderer, just an average cowardly impulsive dude who made a terrible mistake.
