That certainly improved. Linux Mint or Ubuntu are great to discover the GNU+Linux environment. It's very out-of-the-box and easy to maintain if you're not an hardcore gamer and have no need of the best professional creative softwares. If you are committed to read about how it works, you can also do a lot of low-level things and fine tunings that aren't available in Windows or OSX.

@seiori fairly decent priced?! The electronic design is the same as a low-end device from any other company. For example soldered SSD or RAM instead of socketed are scams for that much money. For the same price point you get way better hardware with OEMs' devices coming with Windows preinstalled. And if you really want OSX, you'll better served with some Hackintosh than an Apple product.

@Joe3D Well they do have that on the server market, just not on the consumer one. And you can use virtualization on any CPU, it's just not optimized if there is no special instructions embedded. But IMHO, ARM is still a bit far from being on Apple PCs since it still doesn't provide the same performance and energy efficiency of a Celeron N. It's not like when they switched from PowerPC to x86, this will need to start with the low-end laptops first before they can switch to full ARM and the transition period will stretch to several generations.

@Shitoryumaster I expected this kind of comment. :) The thing is, it's impossible to correctly benchmark any Apple ARM CPU or iOS itself since iPhones are locked. Apple authorized only one bench to be on its Software library and the binary is different and non reproducible between OSes and architectures. The day Apple decides to offer the same openness than any other CPU manufacturer to run another OS, reliable comparisons of iPhones or iOS could be made. Until that it's smoke and mirrors. Geekbench like any benchmark can be fooled by the OS. Just make it launch in a priority level way higher than anything else and it gives better results than a real-world usage, or sustain a power state that normally isn't used that long because it quickly empty the battery or unlocks an unsafe overclocking state to run long term. Even more nasty way : playing with heuristic and launching the software in a bubble which makes it believe the time passes slower than in the reality. BTW, going full "big" out-of-order cores is what makes the RaspberryPi 4 so power hungry at idle comparing to the Rpi 3 or an RK3399 device. Sure, having the latest node shrink from TSMC and a good power management reduces the impact of having only big cores, as AMD showed us with Zen2, but it's still worse than shutting down the big cores and let a pair of low-power cores to handle the small tasks.

@rossmanngroup A lot of open-source software developers are paid by a company or by some crowd-funding and there are companies like Redhat or Codeweavers so it's not impossible to run a business based on FLOSS. But yeah, blaming a student who puts DRM to get a living is totally irrelevant when you see how greedy are multinational companies.

@Lordsarix AOSP and Chromium are open source softwares, meaning audits and removal of callhome lines are done by a lot of non-Google employees. Check an Android distro called Replicant : they remove any proprietary firmwares so if those kind of people are using Android, it's safe to say the call-home lines are removed even if the project is financed by Google.

Music and images softwares are now on par with Windows or Mac, even on the open-source software side. For the music you have Jack, Ardour, Audacity and many other things very powerful that don't have to shy in front of Protools. For the image you have Krita, The Gimp (now even allowing things Photoshop didn't implemented at all), MyPaint, Darktable, Rawtherapy, Inkscape (or even Scribus, in a certain extend). I agree that in the video editing part, it's a bit sparse for professionals (there are still KDenlive and other simple editors) but Blender has a very good video editing tool and in closed-source there is Lightwork and Da Vinci Resolve which are lightweight comparing to Premiere+AE. So I don't know what you find less efficient to be forced to use Windows, maybe it's because the ergonomic and the toolchain is too different than what you learned on ?

Well, it's not "things" but AMD who improved its Linux support to be now a bit better than Nvidia's proprietary driver. That was the main issue of Louis. And even better : nowadays Da Vinci Resolve is ported on Linux for users who need professional video editing software. It's not FLOSS but there is a gratuitous version available and that suite is more optimized than Adobe's one.

@Papergami45 I'm not a rolling release guy, I'm a Debian stable and Centos user for my creative and electronic workshop stations :-) But yeah for an hobbyist it makes sense to closely follow such early developments. That's why I like Linux and FLOSS in general : the variety allows to fit a large spectrum of users.

@RackaApps I am aware of Treble but the huge majority of phones still running aren't upgradeable to Android 8 and there still are plenty of brand new devices sold with an older version. It will take several years before Treble will be a solution for most devices and maybe a decade for a nearly complete replacement of the whole world fleet of smartphones/tablets. Same with UEFI on ARM computers : Google just started on its new Chromebooks and it will be a long time before any IOT/RaspberryPi-like comes with it.

Fuck Youtube and their recurrent bugs, I don't have any notification of this thread. @MkThUndrwd Yeah Winehq becomes greater and greater with releases but it's not a magical workaround and a lot of software doesn't or poorly works. An example is given in this conversation by Ramon with Serif Affinity that doesn't even install through Wine.

That's bullshit. AMD improved a lot, their Linux drivers are now very reliable. OpenCL and OpenGL rendering is identical than on Windows.

@Papergami45 Personnaly, I'm more conservative about the tools I use and I'd rather wait a 1.0 announcement before another look. Resolve fills a niche that Adobe always despised so to me there is no desperate needs for Olive nowadays.

@iamblaineful I think this is most probable they use AMD than an ARM arch. It's less cost on software development and if they wanted they already tried to switch to ARM on their low-tier Macbook Air but they didn't whereas they claimed impressive benchmarks on A9 and A10. That means their iPhone marketing was really too good to be true and they still aren't able to use those SoCs for fluid desktop multitasking experience.
