Shoigu wasn't "axed" - he was promoted! The 4 regions were not "annexed" - they voted to join the Russian Federation, and this time (unlike the applications by Donetsk and Luhansk in 2014) the applications were accepted!

@teakkaye5364 But they also considered the referenda in 2014 as 'illegitimate'! The fact is that in early Feb 2022, Zelensky ordered the assembly of a 40,000 strong task force to 'take back Donbas'. On 16th Feb, the OSCE recorded more than 40 ceasefire breaches, as the UA began shelling Donbas, rising to more than 2,000 a day on the 20th, 21st and 22nd. On 24th Feb, as requested under Article 51 of the UN Charter, Russia stepped in to stop it. Would the ethnic-Russians in Donbas wish to go back to being bombed by their own Government? Would they wish to live with the ban of their native language?
