I think Sargon is either out of his depth or exaggerating his reaction to some things. The cells playing pong were just a small bunch of neurons, no consciousness or anything like that. In fact, the training aspect is kinda interesting. The "reward" was neatly ordered signals. The "punishment" was random signals. Tells you something about how we form habits, if you think about it.
