It would greatly complicate the boilers’ maintenance schedule. Unrefined oils leave enormous amounts of residue, compared to refined fuel, which will clog and ruin the boilers and uptakes without constant cleaning. It’s the same as difference between burning years/old kiln dried oak, or fresh cut pine, in your fireplace.

Hmmm. CV16 USS Lexington would like a word.

There are no limits in war but there are always limits in warship design.

2:11:20 But a “range advantage” of one’s guns means little-or-nothing if one’s rangefinding and gun direction is lacking. Even at the height of the big gun battleship era, hits beyond 24k yards - well below the absolute range of the guns on those ultimate battleships - were vanishingly rare.

The St. Lawrence Seaway (French: la Voie Maritime du Saint-Laurent) is a system of locks, canals, and channels in Canada and the United States that permits oceangoing vessels to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes of North America, as far inland as Duluth, Minnesota, at the western end of Lake Superior. It opened in the 1950s. Before that, yeah, it was the Welland Canal, whose main channel was enlarged in the 1910-30s to 110 metres (350 ft) wide and 9.1 metres (30 ft) deep to permit two large ships to pass going in opposite directions.
